The distribution of perishable products within a certain cold chain might be quite complicated. In addition to the usual logistical challenges, there are also lots of special requirements in regards to temperature-controlled transport and packaging. What is ATP?

The ATP is an international agreement on the transport of perishable goods. The acronym stands for “Agreement on Perishable Transport”. It has been signed by fifty countries, and in principle regulates international freight, although many coutries have established their own regulations according to it, as is the case of Spain; here you can find an example Spanish ATP version 2013.

The aim of this agreement is to ensure that the traffic of goods destined for consumption and requiring a certain temperature range can reach their final destination in optimal conditions.

The agreement establishes what are considered perishable goods: deep-frozen, frozen and others (meat and meat products, dairy products, fish and seafood, fruits and vegetables, etc.). In addition, it may also affect pharmaceutical and health products, among others.

What is an ATP vehicle?

The agreement also regulates the types of vehicles and the conditions that must be met by the so-called “ATP vehicles”, which are those that have the necessary characteristics and pass the appropriate checks to carry out secure ATP transport.   • Types of “special units”: Four types of suitable vehicles are referred to as isothermal, refrigerated (with four classes), refrigerated (with six classes) and calorific (with two classes).
  • Certification and identification marks: There are strict requirements regarding the location, characteristics and data of the plates and stickers (almost forty) that certify an ATP vehicle as such.
  • Inspections: Of course, vehicles must pass inspections in eight scenarios: initial, periodic (at six years and then every three years), upon exceeding 21 years, or in cases of repair, modification, import….
